Kazakhstan announced measures to combat human trafficking at the OSCE Conference in Vienna

The Kazakh delegation participated in the 24th Alliance Against Trafficking in Persons Conference on the theme “Beyond Awareness-Raising: Reshaping Human Trafficking Prevention”, DKNews.kz reports.

The delegation of Kazakhstan included Marat Bashimov, member of the Committee on Legislation and Judicial and Legal Reform of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Saltanat Tursynbekova, head of the National Centre for Human Rights, and representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The Conference was opened by the OSCE Special Representative and Co-ordinator for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, Dr. Kari Johnstone, the OSCE Secretary General, Helga Maria Schmid, the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, the Maltese Minister for Foreign, European Affairs and Trade, Ian Borg, and the Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, Matteo Mecacci.

In his speech, Mr. Bashimov provided information on the measures taken by the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan to combat human trafficking, including the draft law "On Combating Human Trafficking in the Republic of Kazakhstan", developed within the framework of the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On Further Measures in the Field of Human Rights” (dated 13 April 2002). The document provides an integrated approach and covers four main areas: partnership, prevention, law enforcement and assistance.

The Alliance Against Trafficking in Persons Conference is an annual high-level gathering of key stakeholders from the OSCE region aimed at raising the political profile of the fight against trafficking in persons and discussing emerging issues and trends in this area.
